Crack Rar Password Using Ubuntu With Windows
In the past on Windows 7-8.1 I've used my faithful Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Disk or USB to boot up a computer with a lost, forgotten, or otherwise unknown password. I would go to the Sytem32 and rename a copy of cmd.exe to sethc.exe, hold shift for a few seconds and reset the users password from the login page, then go back and revert system32 back to normal. This has worked for years for me. However, with Windows 10, I can't seem to get the drive mounted in Ubuntu. I tried turning off secure boot and uefi and doing a legacy boot to Ubuntu to no avail. I was finally able to crack the password by physically pulling out the afflicted HDD and plugging it into a HDD dock on another Windows computer. Something I noticed that I never had to do in Ubuntu was to make security changes to the cmd.exe and sethc.exe to take ownership of them to allow me to rename them.
Ubuntu Windows Password Reset
In the end it worked fine, but I was wondering if there is a way to still use Ubuntu to accomplish this? I have a locked Windows 10 Ultrabook on the way that I have a feeling the HDD will be much harder to physically get to. I'd rather not spend a huge amount of time working on just getting it out just for a password. Thanks in Advance!
